can t start setup while running xp

Can't start Setup while running XP.

Hello! I'm an Austrian User of Windows Vista and just tried to upgrade my WindowsXP(SP2) to Windows Vista. First of all, there was no Autostart or anything similiar and when i try to run the setup.exe on the DvD an error message pops up and says: "M:\setup.exe isn't a Win32-Application" and I'm not able to start the installation. Can anyone help me?

Do you have the correct DVD in your drive. If you got the package from Microsoft, there are 2 DVD's in the pack - 1 for 32-bit and 1 for 64 bit versions of Vista. It sounds like you may have the 64-bit DVD in your drive.

It would appear that you have tried to install the x64 version of Vista. If you have a 64bit cpu, the only way to install would be to boot from the DVD and do a clean install. You cannot upgrade a 32bit operating system to a 64bit operating system.
Rather than upgrade, a better scenario would be to install Vista to a separate partition or hard drive and dual boot.

Jane, not plain ;) 64bit enabled ;) Batteries not included. Braincell on vacation.
